Last year when the Star Trek film came out Nokia were heavily involved. There was the blatant in-film product placement and also the Nokia 5800 Star Trek edition phone. Now the special edition 5800 was frankly a bit rubbish. But deep in the secret Nokia labs, a much more interesting Star Trek mobile phone was being created. Fourteen fully functioning 'Starfleet communicator' style handsets were produced but unfortunately never made it past the test stage.
We would probably never know that this quirky piece of Star Trek memorabilia existed if it wasn't for a dodgy Ebay auction in which an ex-Nokia employee flogged one of the models, (boxing, instructions and all.)
Hardware-wise, the communicator is based on the N76 handset and comes with an external LCD, a trifecta of lights on its front and is kitted out with a big and heavy brass grill. Oh and not forgetting the dodgy inbuilt sound effects that go off when the device is flipped.
So if you're a Star Trek fan or just like weird mobile prototypes then click here to see a video of the communicator in action.
